This year’s state title promises t be the most hotly contested Championship in Western Australia for many years.
W.A. has been inundated with an injection of top quality new cars and talent. Long gone are the backyard constructed cars, in placed there are professionally constructed chassis with exotic names as Dominators, Sweet Chassis, Rockets, being the most commonly used at the moment.
A wide variety of suspensions are in use currently Leaf Springs, Swing Arm, 2 Link, Four Bar being the most popular rear suspensions in use at the moment, all of these systems offer their own advantages in certain conditions.
Engine vary in this class. Majority being Chevs with a 866 cubic inch limit. Also running tonight is a Mazda Rotary Turbo of Peter Lyall’s and a V6 Turbo Nissan in Bert Vos Bergen’s rear engined Pantera offering a wide variety of sights and sounds.
Super Sedans are currently riding a wave of popularity in W.A. enticing a number of new younger competitors to its ranks. Only have to look at the defending State Champion, Kodee Brown from Broome. 22 year old Kodee Brown bought the Troy Brook Monaro and promptly took out his first State Championship in his first attempt.
At the other end of the scale, 62 year old Veteran Big Bad Bert in his 44th year of sedan car competition who has six W.A. and 1 S.A. title to this credit.
WA 43 Marc Giancola has stepped out from his Fathers shadow and has two late model Australian Titles to his credit. 2 West Australian Super Sedan Championships under his belt to date and he is an unbackable favorite to take out this weekends Blue Ribbon Event.
The Higgs Family have a massive presence this weekend. Young Gun Dustin (aka Superman) is a hard charger, take no prisoners racer. Don’t take your eyes of the 82 Rocket. He surges towards the front of the pack and two wheeled antics will be worth the price of admission alone.
Father of Dustin is Dusty on the blue 81 Rocket identifiable by the Hulk imposed on the side of his car. Currently locked in a points battle for the SSRC Summer Series which travels from Port Headland, Kalgoorlie, Albany and all points in between.
Keith Higgs is in form at the moment. Recently finished a credible fifth at Speedway City in Adelaide in his Sweet Chassis, one of the nice guys in the West Australian scene.
Robert Higgs “Squally” has made the long trip from Karratha for this weekends Title and is looking to stamp his mark in this Division. Don’t mess with the Higgs’s.
Frank does have a new Sweet Four Bar underneath his backside and is coming to grips with the different set ups and driving techniques required with this configuration.
Big Bad Bert would desperately love to add to his tally and is not here to fill in the numbers. The potent Pantera has enough horsepower and technology to cause an upset.
Kevin Bell has been racing a long time now competing in two divisions, no stone has been left unturned with his preparation for this Title. Crew chief Phil Hawkins has gone through the car from bumper to bumper and a Title is well overdue for this likable quiet spoken Busselton Bullet.
Peter Lyall has had his share of bad luck on the Attwell Park circuit, breaking his neck two seasons ago and having a season ending wreck last year here. If the cards fall his way the Mighty Rotary could well end up on the Podium.
Throw in Michael Nash, Terry Green, Shane Reid, Kev Reid, Rab Hambley and Murray Iwanow just to name a few and this makes this Title too wide open to guess. Enjoy Jason Crowe’s efficiency and commentary on the mike. Sedan Car Racing in W.A. would be lost without him.
Whatever the outcome and whomever the eventual winner may be, BE SURE to stay for the Presentations and show appreciation for the effort and show the Supers put on for you.
Regards,
Glenn Piper
